Obadiah: Pride, Pitilessness, Promise & Primacy - Pt 1
“The Pride of your heart has deceived you”
1 Peter 1:10-12
------------
Jeremiah 49:7-22

Pride (1-4):
Proverbs 16:5; 16:18-19; 18:12
Psalm 31:23
1 Peter 5:5b & James 4:6
“Moreover, our first parents only fell openly into the sin of disobedience because, secretly, they had begun to be guilty. Actually, their bad deed could not have been done had not bad will preceded it; what is more, the root of their bad will was nothing else than pride. For, “pride is the beginning of all sin.” & what is pride but an appetite for inordinate exaltation? Now, exaltation is inordinate when the soul cuts itself off from the very Source to which it should keep close & somehow makes itself & becomes an end to itself. This takes place when the soul becomes inordinately pleased with itself, & such self-pleasing occurs when the soul falls away from the unchangeable Good which ought to please the soul far more than the soul can please itself.”
(Augustine, The City of God, Bk 14, ch. 13)
“Idolatry is having or inventing something in which one trusts in place of or alongside of the only true God, who has revealed himself in his Word.”
(Heidelberg Catechism 95)
Pitilessness (10-14)
Punishment (5-9)
Principle (15)
Luke 6:37-38
Titus 3:3-7

John 20:19-31 - Part D
So far in this mini-series within the larger Gospel According to John series, we have seen the following: (1) Jesus rose from the dead-the same body that suffered on the cross & none other, though with different qualities (unlike Lazarus’s resuscitation). (2) Christ’s resurrection becomes the means & purpose in the church’s going forth & proclaiming the Gospel (Replication & Multiplication). (3) His resurrection was seen by many eyewitnesses who did not expect nor anticipate this resurrection.
________
By His resurrection, His sacrificial death has genuinely become the once-for-all-time-it-is-finished work that puts His people in good standing with the Father (Romans 4:21-25 & 5:9-11), & shall save us from the wrath to come (1 Thessalonians 1:10). By His resurrection He now sits enthroned at the “right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:3); is declared the Son of God with power by the Spirit of holiness (Romans 1:3-4); & He continues as our unending Great High Priest interceding for us (Hebrews 7:24-25). The very death-defying power the Father exhibited in raising Jesus from the dead is now at work in the Church for the Church (Ephesians 1:17-23). By His resurrection He is established as the New Adam over all creation (Psalm 8 & Hebrews 2; 1 Corinthians 15:44-49); He will return one day to save & rescue creation (Romans 8:18-25); He will also raise us & transform us bodily (creation), so that we will be like Him (Philippians 3:20-21 & 1 John 3:1-3); & will be the Judge on the throne of judgment judging all people, dispensing justice on the one hand (2 Thessalonians 1:5-10) & gracious mercy on the other (1 Thessalonians 1:9-10; Philippians 2:5-11; 2 Corinthians 5:10; Acts 10:40-43, 17:30-31).

***United to Him in His [Death &] Resurrection:
Col. 2:12-15: The dominance, damnation & despair of sin is demolished. [see also 1 Peter 3:21-22; Romans 6:3-11]
1 Cor. 6:13b-15a: It is the energizing umph for our avoiding sin & growing in purity.
2 Cor. 4:7-11: Propels our endurance & gives us comfortable confidence in the ferocious face of death & deadly situations, adversity & pressure.
Eph. 2:4-10: Creates our communion with God, present & future, which therefore invigorates our heaven-on-earth life now.
